New Bulky Sulfonated Poly(ether sulfone) for Polymer Membrane Fuel Cells

Finding renewable alternative source of energy for non-renewable fossil fuels is one of the most important issues of men in the past, now, and forever. Fuel cells which convert chemical energy to electrical energy are regarded as promising future power sources [1]. In recent years, research on proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) has increased significantly. Among several types of fuel cells, polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells are more studied and discussed [2]. Nafion is the most popular and commercial membrane, widely used as the membrane in these types of fuel cells. However, these membranes have some disadvantages such as high cost, low conductivity at elevated temperatures, and high methanol crossover that advent searching for other materials with superior properties. In the past decade, a diversity of proton conductive materials, partially or completely fluorinated polymers have been suggested as alternative membranes [3]. Among them, sulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfone)s (SPAES)s exhibit remarkable properties in terms of chemical stability, thermal stability, mechanical strength, and low methanol permeability. Thus, the preparation and characterization of novel bulky sulfonated poly(ether sulfone)s were conducted in this research. For this purpose, a new 1,4-dihydroxy anthraquinone-based bisphenol (BP) was prepared according to the reaction of 1,4-dihydroxy anthraquinone with 4,4’-dichlorodiphenyl sulfone (Scheme 1). Then, a series of novel sulfonated poly(ether sulfone)s were prepared using direct copolymerization of 3,3′-disulfonated-4,4′-difluorodiphenyl sulfone as synthesized sulfonated dihalide and difluorodiphenyl sulfone as nonsulfonated dihalide monomer with the new synthesized diol (BP). Copolymers were synthesized by polycondensation in different degrees of sulfonation (25-45%) and characterized.
