چکیده مقاله
In recent years, significant attentions have been paid to develop high-performance cost-effective polymer membranes for polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cells as clean energy sources. Among different candidates, perfluorosulfonate ionomers especially Nafion are the most common commercially available PEMs [1]. However, some disadvantages such as high crossover, low operating temperature, and the high cost critically limit their industrial application [2]. Due to these deficiencies widespread efforts have been devoted developing alternative PEMs based on sulfonated aromatic polymers. In this regard, synthesis, and properties of a novel designed copolyimide using ionic-liquid medium (1-ethyl-3-methyl imidazolium bromide) was conducted in this research. The sulfonated diamine (BANBPDS) and nunsulfonated diamine (BANBP) were synthesized first (Scheme 1). Then polycondensation reaction of 1,4,5,8-naphthalene tetracarboxylic dianhydride (NTDA) with combination of BANBPDS and BANBP in adjusted molar ratios resulted in preparation of sulfonated copolyimides with five sulfonation degrees of 40, 50, 60, 70, and 80. In this way sulfonated copolyimides containing carbonyl, flexible ether, and naphthyl bulky groups with high-molecular-weight were prepared. Investigation of the properties showed the capability of the prepared membranes for fuel cell performance [3].
