چکیده مقاله
Polymeric materials have always attracted high scientific attention due to their outstanding performance and high potential applications [1,2]. It has been experimentally supported to shifting the resin morphology from a compact heterogeneous to a highly swollen semi-gelled phase. Thus, it is preferred to swell the polymer framework [3,4].
Herein, sulfonated cation exchange PS-DVB resins have been prepared and some electrochemical properties especially in terms of sulfur distribution were evaluated. First, the polymer was swelled. In case of H2SO4, the sulfonating process was conducted in the acid: solvent of 5:1 v/v and 80°C for 8 h and in case of HClO3, the experiments were implemented in two acid concentrations of 40% and 60% at 42°C and 60°C for 8 h.
Regarding to PS-DVB, the maximum IEC amount is 5.4 mmol. g-1 corresponding to the full functionalization of all aromatic rings with sulfonic acid. The IEC amounts reveal that SPS-DVB-H2SO4 was rather quantitative. The comparison of the IEC amount with elemental analysis of C and S can give detailed information of different types of sulfo- groups in the polymer framework containing sulfonic (-SO2OH), sulfone bridge (-SO2-) and chlorosulfonic (-SO2Cl). Furthermore, the elemental data denoted that the formation of more sulfone bridges in HCLO3 samples that consistence with 78% and 86% of the phenyl rings bearing only one sulfonic group. This despite the fact that in H2SO4, 98% of the phenyl rings were functionalized and the amount of sulfo groups in the form of SO2OH was drastically in comparison with sulfone bridges.
